The space to Earth radio communications was part of the Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment (SAREX) which has been part of a number of Space Shuttle missions. Duffy, a licensed amateur radio operator using call letters N5WQW, at one point talked to his children, also licensed "hams," during a call to a Texas elementary school.
