Dust over the Persian Gulf
| Title |
Dust over the Persian Gulf |
| Description |
Dust blew off the coast of the United Arab Emirates on October 10, 2007. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) [ http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov ] on NASA's Terra [ http://terra.nasa.gov ] satellite took this picture the same day. The beige dust plume is obvious as it blows westward off the coast and over the Persian Gulf. West of the dust plume is another plume of aerosols, particles of liquid or solid suspended in the atmosphere. The origin of this plume is not as obvious, and it could result from an earlier dust storm, or from smoke or haze. Dust Storm in the United Arab Emirates |
| Description |
A day-long dust storm surprised residents of Al Ain on October 12, 2005, according to a report in the Khaleej Times. The storm dropped visibility to less than 4 kilometers (about 2.5 miles) and pushed temperatures to 41 degrees Celsius (about 106 degrees Fahrenheit). Those dealing with respiratory ailments or fasting for Ramadan were warned to be especially cautious. Al Ain (also Al Ayn) is in the eastern part of the United Arab Emirates, near the border with Oman. The town is known for both its gardens and its archaeological remains. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) [ http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/ ] flying onboard the Aqua [ http://aqua.nasa.gov/ ] satellite captured this image on October 12, 2005. In this image, tendrils of dust sweep over both the Persian Gulf to the West, and the Gulf of Oman to the East. Two interesting features visible through the dust are Dubai's manmade Palm Islands—described by their builders as the Eighth Wonder of the World—in the eastern part of the United Arab Emirates. An International Space Station astronaut photographed Palm Jumeirah [ http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images.php3?img_id=16995 ] on April 1, 2005. | Description |
A dust storm was blowing over a wide area of the Middle East on May 28, 2003. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image shows a haze of dust over (clockwise from top right) Iran, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. The dust is especially thick in the center of the Persian Gulf. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. Dust Storm Over Persian Gulf |
| Description |
On May 14, 2004, the morning overpass of the Terra satellite over the Persian Gulf captured this image of a large dust storm spreading a veil of dust over the water and the countries surrounding the shores: (clockwise from top left corner) Iraq, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Saudia Arabia, and Kuwait. The peninsular country on the western shore of the Gulf is Qatar. The dust swirls in streamers, arcs, and parallel lines over more than half the Gulf. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at additional resolutions. Dust Storm over the Persian Gulf |
| Description |
A dust storm from the Arabian Peninsula blew across the Persian Gulf toward Iran on February 17, 2007. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) [ http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov ] on NASA's Aqua [ http://aqua.nasa.gov ] satellite took this picture the same day, capturing the pale beige plumes of dust blowing toward the northeast over the ocean. Also visible are blue-green patches in the ocean, likely resulting from sediment or shallow water. Along the coast of the United Arab Emirates, just barely out of the path of the dust, are artificial island resorts. [ http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images.php3?img_id=17435 ] Along with northern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula is one of the world's most dust-prone regions. A massive sand desert, Ar Rub' al Khali, [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rub'_al_Khali ] covers much of southern Saudi Arabia, northern Yemen and Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, providing ample material for dust storms. Massive Sandstorm in Qatar |
| Description |
This striking photograph shows a massive sandstorm sweeping over the Persian Gulf state of Qatar as it races southward toward southeastern Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on February 15, 2004. A major upper level low pressure over southwestern Asia led to a series of storms sweeping through the area. The crew of the International Space Station acquired this image with a digital camera using a 50-mm lens. Astronaut photograph ISS008-E-16355 was provided by the Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth at NASA Johnson Space Center. |

| Description |
This oblique view of the south Persian Gulf region (26.0N, 54.0E) was taken over Iran looking west across the south Persian Gulf into the Trucial Coast of the United Arab Emirates and the prominent Qatar peninsula. Rich in petroleum resources, this region supplies much of the world's oil needs from its many ports and off shore loading facilities. |

Portions of Oman, The United Arab Emirates and Iran are seen at the Strait of Hormuz (26.0N, 56.0E) in this view. A number of ship wakes can be seen in the area of the strait. Sunglint in the Persian Gulf to the northwest, accentuates the complex currents and oil slicks, seen as dark toned blue streaks on the surface. Qeshm Island, just off the coast of Iran, can be seen on the edge of the photo. |

Ships at anchor, Gulf of Oman |
| Description |
These supertankers, riding at anchor off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, Gulf of Oman (25.5N, 56.5E) cast long shadows and eddy currents in the late afternoon sun. The ships are anchored just outside the Persian Gulf. Because of a surplus of supertankers in the world, many of them are simply moored in the Gulf of Oman where they can be safely anchored and yet be close to the oil ports when activated. |

STS-35 Earth observation of the Persian Gulf area |
| Description |
STS-35 Earth observation taken aboard Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102, is of the Persian Gulf area. Major cities and oilfields of the countries of Saudi Arabia (foreground), Iraq (top left), Iran (top center and top right), Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and a portion of the United Arab Emirates are visible in this scene. The cities are the large whitish areas of city lights. Flares characteristic of the Mid-East oil field practices are visible both onshore and offshore throughout the scene. Major cities identifiable are in Iraq - Baghdad, Basra, and Faw, in Qatar - Ab Dawhah, in Kuwait - Kuwait City, in Saudi Arabia - Riyadh, Al Jubayl, Dharan, Al Huf, Ad Dilam and Al Hariq, and Bahrain and its associated causeway to the mainland. |

Al Jirab Island, United Arab Emirates, Persian Gulf |
| Description |
Al Jirab Island, United Arab Emirates, in the Persian Gulf (24.0N, 54.0E) is an offshore oil tanker loading facility in the southern Persian Gulf. During the Gulf War in early 1991, drifting oil from the Kuwait Oil Fields, some 460 miles to the north, threatened the area. Seen as a dark blue floating mass as well as weathered patches of lighter brown, between the island and the mainland, the oil made its way into the channel, scaring the local beaches. |
