Dust Storm Off the Coast of Western Africa |
| Description |
The Sahara, one of the world's most prolific dust producers, kicked up another storm on July 19, 2005. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) [ http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/ ] flying onboard the Aqua [ http://aqua.nasa.gov/ ] satellite captured this image of the west coast of Africa. In this image, the dust storm, several hundred kilometers across, blows off the coasts of (from top to bottom) Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau. Clouds also float over the Atlantic. The white clouds are at an elevation higher than the dust storm, and the yellowish clouds are either below or at the same elevation as the dust. NASA image created by Jeff Schmaltz, MODIS Rapid Response team. |

Saharan Dust off West Africa |
| Description |
Dust storms regularly sweep out over the Atlantic Ocean from the Sahara Desert at this time of year, sometimes blowing all the way to North and South America. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite on June 4, 2003, shows a large plume of dust billowing over Senegal and Gambia on the West African coastline. In the coastal waters to the north, colorful blooms of marine organisms color the waters a bright aquamarine. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS' maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters. Image courtesy Jeff Schmaltz, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA GSFC |

Fires in West Africa |
| Description |
Fire activity in Africa south of the Sahara Desert migrates across the continent with the seasons. In the Sahel and savannas just south of the Sahara, the agricultural burning season begins in Norhtern Hemisphere fall and progresses toward a peak of activity in mid-winter. In this image of western Africa, fires (marked in red) have been detected across several West African nations: (clockwise from right center) Mali, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and the Gambia. At top is Mauritania. This image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on November 14, 2003. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS? maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters. The west-central Africa fire season is currently underway, and widespread biomass burning (red dots) is apparent in this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Aqua satellite captured on January 3, 2003. Countries pictured are (clockwise from top left) Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and the Gambia. Africa?s north-of-the-equator fire season is still underway on January 28, 2003. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image captured by the Aqua satellite shows scores of fires (red dots) mingling their smoke with Saharan dust blowing out over the Atlantic. Countries shown are clockwise from top left) Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, and The Gambia. Fires in West Africa |
| Description |
A high concentration of fires (red dots) was detected in southern Guinea (center) in West Africa on March 10, 2003, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. Other countries shown are (clockwise from top left) Senegal (surrounding Gambia), Mali, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea-Bissau. Over the Atlantic Ocean (left), dust from the Sahara Desert creates a tan haze. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel.
