A Roll Cloud Over Missouri
Title A Roll Cloud Over Missouri
Explanation What kind of cloud is this? A roll cloud [ http://weathersavvy.com/Q-Shelf_Roll_Clouds1.html ]. These rare long clouds may form near advancing cold fronts. In particular, a downdraft from an advancing storm front can cause moist warm air to rise, cool below its dew point, and so form a cloud. When this happens uniformly along an extended front, a roll cloud [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roll_cloud ] may form. Roll clouds [ http://www.bom.gov.au/calendar/sep.shtml ] may actually have air circulating along the long horizontal axis of the cloud. A roll cloud [ http://ams.allenpress.com/pdfserv/i1520-0477-080-11-2199.pdf ] is not thought to be able to morph into a tornado [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap050613.html ]. Unlike a similar shelf cloud [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelf_cloud ], a roll cloud is completely detached from their parent cumulonimbus [ http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/mtr/cld/cldtyp/vrt/cb.rxml ] cloud. Pictured above [ http://www.pbase.com/missouri_skies/image/44591231 ], a roll cloud [ http://epod.usra.edu/archive/epodviewer.php3?oid=280448 ] extends far into the distance in the summer of 2005 above Albany [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albany%2C_Missouri ], Missouri [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missouri ], USA [ http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/us.html ].
