STS-65 Japanese Payload Specialist Chiaki Mukai, fully suited in a launch and entry suit (LES) and launch and entry helmet (LEH), is assisted by a team of SCUBA-equipped divers during a launch emergency egress (bailout) training exercise in the Johnson Space Center's (JSC's) Weightless Environment Training Facility (WETF) Bldg 29 pool. Mukai floats via underarm flotation device or "Mae West's" during the bailout exercise. A portion of the STS-65 crew participated in the exercise. Mukai, representing the National Space Development Agency (NASDA) of Japan, will join six NASA astronauts for the International Microgravity Laboratory 2 (IML-2) mission aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102, later this year. |
