During the half-time ceremonies of the Rice vs. Navy football game Oct. 10, 2009, Johnson Space Center Director Mike Coats presented Rice University President David Leebron with the Ambassador of Exploration Award that was presented posthumously to President John F. Kennedy. From left to right are Rep. Pete Olsen (R-TX), Rice University President David Leebron and JSC Director Michael Coats holding the award. On July 20, the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, NASA honored President Kennedy with the award for his vision and leadership in landing a man on the moon. The Kennedy family has selected Rice University to house and publicly display the award at Fondren Library. Photo Description The boilerplate Orion crew module for the Orion Launch Abort System Pad Abort-1 flight test is tilted on jacks during weight and balance testing at NASA Dryden. Project Description NASA Dryden Flight Research Center has a critical role in the early development of the Constellation systems. Applying Dryden's expertise with testing unique flight configurations, Dryden is helping to manage and implement the abort flight tests for the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle. Dryden will lead the development and integration of the full-size Orion test articles along with development of the ground support equipment, flight instrumentation and launch facility construction for the early pad abort and all ascent abort flight tests. The Orion Abort Flight Test effort includes two pad abort tests, simulating aborts during a launch pad emergency, and four ascent aborts, simulating aborts during first stage flight of Orion spacecraft. Dryden manages procurement and oversees development of the solid fuel abort test booster rockets used for ascent abort testing, and is responsible for the integration of the Orion test articles with their booster rockets. NASA Dryden is also supporting Constellation program technical integration activities. Future Dryden support roles include assisting with the development of lunar lander test and verification support and flight simulation support of the Constellation training facility. Other potential support include west coast recovery operations, and operation of a lunar / Mars surface analog test site. The Orion Abort Flight Test project is managed by NASA Dryden under the leadership of the Project Orion Flight Test Office at NASA's Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas. The idea that rocks could fall from the sky was generally accepted by the early nineteenth century. At first, people thought these rocks formed in the atmosphere, hence the name meteorites. By the beginning of the twentieth century, scientists were sure that meteorites came from space and fairly sure they came from our solar system. Evidence mounted that meteorites came from the asteroid belt (between Mars and Jupiter), and until the early 1980s most scientists thought that all meteorites came from this belt. This meteorite, found in Antarctica in 1981, was the first exception. It is almost identical to rocks that the Apollo astronauts brought back from the Moon, and detailed study showed that it was from the Moon. The white fragments are rich in anorthite, a calcium-rich silicate mineral that makes up most of the lunar highlands. Lunar meteorites have a distinctive greenish tinge to their fusion crusts. Twelve lunar meteorites had been identified by late 1996, including rocks from the lunar highlands and the maria (the dark areas of the Moon). The Lunar Module ?Spider,? remains attached to the Saturn IVB stage in earth orbit prior to docking with Apollo 9?s Command/Service Module, ?Gumdrop.? The photo was taken following separation of the CSM from the S-IVB stage, and the Spacecraft Lunar Module Adapter (SLA) panels have already been jettisoned. Following a March 3, 1969 launch, Apollo 9?s crew of James McDivitt, Dave Scott, and Rusty Schweickart spent 10 days testing the Lunar Module and Command and Service Modules in Earth orbit. Apollo 9 was the first mission to dock the CSM with the LEM, and the astronauts paved the way for subsequent flights to the moon with the CSM and the LEM. |

Officially designated Apollo/Saturn 204, but more commonly known as Apollo 1, this close-up view of the interior of the Command Module shows the effects of the intense heat of the flash fire which killed the prime crew during a routine training exercise. While strapped into their seats inside the Command Module atop the giant Saturn V Moon rocket, a faulty electrical switch created a spark which ignited the pure oxygen environment. The speed and intensity of the fire quickly exhausted the oxygen supply inside the crew cabin. Unable to deploy the hatch due to its cumbersome design and lack of breathable oxygen, the crew lost consciousness and perished. They were: astronauts Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, (the second American to fly into space) Edward H. White II, (the first American to "walk" in space) and Roger B. Chaffee, (a "rookie" on his first space mission). |

Almost the entire coastline of Africa is clearly visible. The Arabian Peninsula can be seen at the Northeastern edge of Africa. The large island off the coast of Africa is the Malagasy Republic. The Asian mainland is on the horizon toward the Northeast. |

View of the lunar surface taken from the Apollo 8 spacecraft looking southward from high altitude across the Southern Sea. The bright-rayed crater near the horizon is located near 130 degrees east longitude and 70 degrees south latitude. The dark floored crater near the middle of the right side of the photograph is about 70 kilometers (45 statute miles) in diameter. Both features are beyond the eastern limb of the Moon as viewed from earth, neither has a name. |

A high forward oblique view of Rima Ariadaeus on the Moon, as photographed by the Apollo 10 astronauts in May of 1969. Center point coordinates are located at 17 degrees, 5 minutes east longitude and 5 degrees, 0 minutes north latitude. One of the Apollo 10 astronauts aimed a handheld 70mm camera at the surface from lunar orbit for a series of pictures in this area. |

This oblique view of the Moon's surface was photographed by the Apollo 10 astronauts in May of 1969. Center point coordinates are located at 16 degrees, 2 minutes east longitude and 0 degrees, 3 minutes north latitude. One of the Apollo 10 astronauts attached a 250mm lens and aimed a handheld 70mm camera at the surface from lunar orbit for a series of pictures in this area. |
