Description If you're heading through America's Sunbelt this week, you might look out your car window to see driving alongside you a nearly 45-foot-long (13.7 m) rocket assembly. In the background are large, white vacuum spheres in support of the hypersonic wind tunnel complex. The launch abort system pathfinder hit the road on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, from NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., and is on its way to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The pathfinder will support the first flight test of the abort system, called Pad Abort 1. A full-scale mock-up of the launch abort system (LAS) for NASA's Orion crew exploration vehicle began a week-long journey today across the country to be delivered to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, where it will help NASA prepare for the first abort system test, known as Pad Abort 1. The mock-up, also known as the LAS pathfinder, left NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., today and hit the road on a large flatbed trailer. Engineers and technicians at Langley designed and fabricated the hardware, which represents the size, outer shape and specific mass characteristics of Orion's abort system. Evidence from NASA's Chandra …
01/05/10
Description Evidence from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Magellan telescopes suggest a star was torn apart by an intermediate-mass black hole in a globular cluster. In this image, X-rays from Chandra are shown in blue and are overlaid on an optical image from the Hubble Space Telescope. The Chandra observations show that this object is a so-called ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). An unusual class of objects, ULXs emit more X-rays than stars, but less than quasars. Their exact nature has remained a mystery, but one suggestion is that some ULXs are black holes with masses between about a hundred and a thousands times that of the Sun. Data optical light obtained with the Magellan I and II telescopes in Las Campanas, Chile, also provides intriguing information about this object, which is found in the elliptical galaxy NGC 1399 in the Fornax cluster. The spectrum reveals emission from oxygen and nitrogen but no hydrogen, a rare set of signals from within globular clusters. The combination of this unusual X-ray and optical emission makes this a remarkable object. This leads the researchers to suspect that a white dwarf star strayed too close to the intermediate-mass black hole and was ripped apart by tidal forces. Another interesting aspect to this object is that it is found within a globular cluster, a very old, very tight grouping of stars. Astronomers have long suspected globular clusters contained intermediate-mass black holes, but there has been no conclusive evidence of their existence there to date. If confirmed, this finding would represent the first such substantiation. Image Credits: X-ray: NASA/CXC/UA/J. Irwin et al. Optical: NASA/STScI

Date 11/13/96
Description These two images of the Santa Monica Mountains were taken by NASA's Airborne Visible and Infra-Red Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS). They show changes on the ground caused by the Calabasas/Malibu fire that started on October 21. The image on the left was taken on October 17, four days before the fire. The image on the right was taken on October 23. Scientists and fire agencies are using these images to map the chaparral vegetation in the region to help them understand the potential for future wild fires. The area of the image measures 10 kilometers by 11 kilometers (6.2 miles by 6.8 miles) and is centered near Agoura Hills. The line near the top of the image is the 101 Freeway. In the image on the right, the dark purple region is a portion of the fire scar. The road just to the left of the burn area is Las Virgenes Road. Malibu Lake is the black, arrow-shaped region. Mulholland Highway is the red line just north of Malibu Lake. The bottom part of the image is Malibu Creek State Park. The AVIRIS instrument flies aboard a NASA ER-2 airplane. Earth scientists use AVIRIS to conduct research and applications across a range of scientific disciplines, including ecology, geology, mineral hazards, snow and ice, coastal and inland waters, and wild fires. AVIRIS was developed and is managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for NASA's Office of Mission to Planet Earth. #####

Description Halley's Comet as photographed May 8, 1910, by Dr. G.W. Ritchey using the 60-inch (1.5-meter) telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory, Calif., during the comet's last appearance. The head of the comet and the beginning of its long tail are shown. Short, straight streaks are background stars. The comet, due to return to the Sun's vicinity in 1986, will be the object of a worldwide observation effort by professional and amateur astronomers. Jet Propulsion Laboratory is the western hemisphere lead center for the International Halley Watch. A disc of material -- possib …
Description A disc of material -- possibly a developing solar system -- discovered in 1984 around the nearby star Beta Pictoris has been found to be at least twice as large as originally believed. Drs. Bradford A. Smith of the University of Arizona and Richard J. Terrile of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who first photographed the circumstellar disc, rephotographed the star with improved instruments in February 1985 and found the circumstellar disc to reach more than 1,000 astronomical units (about 100 billion miles) from Beta Pictoris. Their original data showed the disc to reach half that distance. The disc is seen nearly edge- on in this false-color picture. The disc, the diameter of which is at least 20 times larger than that of our solar system, is thought to be comprised of dust- to brick-sized particles. Light from the star was blocked by an instrument called a planetary coronagraph so the faint disc could be photographed. The instrument was used in conjunction with a sensitive charge- coupled device (CCD) detector and the 2.5-meter (100-inch) duPont telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. The observatory is operated by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, D.C. #####

Date 11/13/00
Description The 1,200-kilometer (800-mile) San Andreas is the longest fault in California and one of the longest in North America. This perspective view of a portion of the fault was generated using data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), which flew on NASA's Space Shuttle last February, and an enhanced, true- color Landsat satellite image. The view shown looks southeast along the San Andreas where it cuts along the base of the mountains in the Temblor Range near Bakersfield. The fault is the distinctively linear feature to the right of the mountains. To the left of the range is a portion of the agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley. In the background is the snow-capped peak of Mt. Pinos at an elevation of 2,692 meters (8,831 feet). The complex topography in the area is some of the most spectacular along the course of the fault. To the right of the fault is the famous Carrizo Plain. Dry conditions on the plain have helped preserve the surface trace of the fault, which is scrutinized by both amateur and professional geologists. In 1857, one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in the United States occurred just north of the Carrizo Plain. With an estimated magnitude of 8.0, the quake severely shook buildings in Los Angeles, caused significant surface rupture along a 350-kilometer (220-mile) segment of the fault, and was felt as far away as Las Vegas, Nev. This portion of the San Andreas is an important area of study for seismologists. For visualization purposes, topographic heights displayed in this image are exaggerated two times. The elevation data used in this image was acquired by SRTM aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, launched on February 11, 2000. SRTM used the same radar instrument that comprised the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) that flew twice on Endeavour in 1994. SRTM was designed to collect three-dimensional measurements of Earth's land surface. To collect the 3-D SRTM data, engineers added a mast 60 meters (about 200 feet) long, installed additional C-band and X-band antennas, and improved tracking and navigation devices. The mission is a cooperative project between the NASA, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) of the U.S. Department of Defense, and the German and Italian space agencies. It is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif, for NASA's Earth Science Enterprise, Washington, D.C. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
