Title MA-1 Capsule Reassembled After Explosion
Full Description The main objectives of Mercury Atlas-1's (MA-1) were to recover the capsule and test the integrity of the Mercury capsule structure and afterbody shingles. About one minute after liftoff MA-1 exploded and the remaining debris landed 7 miles off the Florida shore. The debris was collected and engineers attempted to reassemble MA-1 to determine the cause of the explosion.

Title Big Joe Ready for Launch at Cape Canaveral
Full Description Big Joe ready for launch at Cape Canaveral, FL. The objective of "Big Joe" was to test the ablating heatshield. The flight was both a success and failure ? the heatshield survived reentry and was in remarkably good condition when retrieved from the Atlantic. The Atlas-D booster, however, failed to stage and separated too late from the Mercury capsule.

Title John Glenn enters his Friendship 7 capsule
Full Description Project Mercury astronaut John H. Glenn, Jr. enters his Mercury ?Friendship 7? capsule before launch on February 20, 1962. At 9:47 a.m. (EST), his Atlas launch vehicle lifted him into orbit for his flight lasting 4 hours, 55 minutes and 23 seconds. Onboard Friendship 7, Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth, and the third American to fly in space. A faulty signal indicating a problem with the heat shield forced NASA mission controllers to cut the flight to only three orbits, but Glenn returned to Earth safely.

0313-192: The Wrong Galaxy
Title 0313-192: The Wrong Galaxy
Explanation Centered above [ http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/2003/04/ ] is distant galaxy 0313-192, some one billion light-years away. Radio emission from the galaxy has been mapped by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Large Array [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap020528.html ] and is shown in red, composited with a visible light image from the Hubble Space Telescope's new Advanced Camera for Surveys. Dust [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap020703.html ] lanes and other features in the Hubble image as well as infrared Gemini [ http://www.gemini.edu/science/galacticjet.html ] telescope data demonstrate clearly that 0313-192 is a spiral galaxy seen edge-on [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap010510.html ]. (Note the unrelated spiral galaxy seen face-on [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap010427.html ] above and to the right.) For years, double cosmic clouds [ http://www.cv.nrao.edu/~abridle/ dragnparts.htm ] of radio emission such as those flanking this spiral galaxy's core have been studied and cataloged [ http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/atlas/ ]. But, at least until now, such radio sources [ http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap020226.html ] were only known to arise from the cores of giant elliptical galaxies or in violent merging galaxy systems, making 0313-192 the wrong kind of galaxy [ http://stardate.org/resources/galaxy/types.html ] to be found in this scenario. Astronomers are searching for clues [ http://www.aas.org/publications/baas/v34n4/aas201/ 795.htm ] to why this spiral galaxy, potentially similar to our own Milky Way, shows such powerful activity.
