Description:
The winds spreading smoke from the Day Fire northwest of Los Angeles, California, have shifted once again. On September 20, 2006, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image of smoke spreading southeast over Los Angeles. The day before, smoke blew northeast, while on September 17, the smoke" title="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/natural_hazards_v2.php3?img_id=13869">smoke">http://earthobserva…blew west, over the Pacific Ocean. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fire are outlined in red. According to the September 21 report from the National Interagency Fire Center, the Day Fire had grown to 99,950 acres and was 35 percent contained.
