Title:
Manam, Papau New Guinea
Description:
Manam Volcano continued to emit a volcanic plume of ash and/or steam on May 25, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, a faint plume moves away from the volcano toward the northwest. The volcanic plume is thinner and darker that the bright, fluffy clouds near the volcano’s summit. Brown-green sediment plumes from mainland Papua New Guinea continue to push into the ocean.

NASA image created by Jesse Allen, Earth Observatory, using data obtained courtesy of the MODIS Rapid Response team.
