Title:
Fires in Victoria, Australia
Description:
In the forested mountains of Victoria’s Gippsland region, several fires were burning on April 19, 2006, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed over. Places where the sensor detected actively burning fires are marked in red. Plumes of bluish smoke drift southeastward over the Tasman Sea. The westernmost fire in the scene is burning west of the town of Dargo, and it was started by an abandoned campfire, according to news reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Website.

The high-resolution image provided above has a spatial resolution of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides daily images of the area in a variety of resolutions and formats.
