Title:
Fires in Southeast Asia
Description:
Biomass burning appeared to be increasing across Southeast Asia as February turned over to March. This image from the Mod erate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqu a satellite shows widespread burning across the region on March 2, 2004, with active fire detections marked in orange. The fires burning in recent days are smokier than those detected earlier in February, with smoke pooling in the valleys in the mountainous terrain of northern Thailand and northwest Laos and dirtying the air over a bank of clouds in the upper right corner of the image.
