Dec. -45° 54' 57".27 Constellation: Vela Distance: About 815 light-years (250 parsecs) Dimensions: The image is roughly 3.3 arcminutes (0.78 light-years or 0.24 parsecs) across. About the Data Data Description: These data are from the HST proposal 9698 by K. Noll, H. Bond, C. Christian, L. Frattare, F. Hamilton, Z. Levay, T. Royle (Hubble Heritage Team STScI/AURA) and collaborators W. Blair (JHU) and D. Malin (DMI). The H-alpha survey was undertaken by the Anglo-Australian Observatory on behalf of the UK and Australian communities and had been scanned and put on line under the auspices of the Wide Field Astronomy unit. The Vela mosaic has been put together from this data by Mike Read and Quentin Parker. This image has been labled with several features and shows the location of Pencil Nebula image by David Malin.
