Title:
An Auroral Ring on Jupiter
Explanation:
Do other planets have aurora? Terrestrial [ http://work.ucsd.ed…] and spacecraft observations have found evidence for aurora on Venus [ http://www.seds.org…], Mars [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…http://www.seds.org…], Jupiter [ http://www.seds.org…], Saturn [ http://www.seds.org…], Uranus [ http://www.seds.org…], and Neptune [ http://www.seds.org…]. In the above false-color photograph [ http://galileo.ivv.…], a good portion of an auroral ring [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…http://adsabs.harva…] was captured recently in optical light by the Galileo spacecraft [ http://galileo.ivv.…] in orbit around Jupiter [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…http://antwrp.gsfc.…]. Auroral rings [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…http://www.geo.mtu.…] encircle a planet's magnetic pole, and result from charged particles spiraling down magnetic field lines. Although the surroundings near Jupiter [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] are much different than Earth [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], the auroral rings [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] appear similar.
