Title:
The Crab Nebula from CFHT
Explanation:
This is the mess that is left when a star explodes. The Crab Nebula [ http://www.seds.org…], the result of a supernova [ http://imagine.gsfc…] seen in 1054 AD [ http://www.seds.org…], is filled with mysterious filaments. The filaments [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] are not only tremendously complex, but appear to have less mass than expelled [ http://adsabs.harva…] in the original supernova and a higher speed than expected [ http://adsabs.harva…] from a free explosion. The above image [ http://www.cfht.haw…], taken by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope [ http://www.cfht.haw…] (CFHT), is in three colors chosen for scientific interest. The Crab Nebula [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] spans about 10 light-years [ http://starchild.gs…]. In the nebula's very center lies a pulsar [ http://www.jb.man.a…]: a neutron star [ http://www.astro.um…] as massive as the Sun [ http://www.nineplan…] but with only the size of a small town [ http://www.cityofho…]. The Crab Pulsar [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] rotates about 30 times each second.
