Title:
The Fogs of Mars
Explanation:
Fogs of clouds and dust covered parts of southern Mars [ http://www.nineplan…] during last Martian winter [ http://www.giss.nas…]. Giant volcanoes [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], such as Ascraeus Mons [ http://www.solarvie…], the central circular feature near the top of the image [ http://www.msss.com…], were surrounded by large water clouds [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…]. Slightly southwest, Pavonis Mons [ http://ic.arc.nasa.…] and Arisa Mons [ http://www.spacedai…] also peeked above their water clouds. The rough terrain below center is Labyrinthus Noctis [ http://mars.jpl.nas…], a maze of deep troughs running over 200 kilometers long. Directly south, a large white dust storm fogs Syria Planum [ http://ic.arc.nasa.…group/Atlas/Mars/VSC /views/md15sxxx/md15 s105.html ], a large plateau [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…]. This image mosaic [ http://www.msss.com…] was taken by the Mars Global Surveyor [ http://mars.jpl.nas…] spacecraft currently orbiting Mars [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…]. Soon, five more [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] Earth-launched spacecraft should arrive at the Red Planet [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], named for the Roman god of war [ http://www.wikipedia .org/wiki/Mars_(god) ].
