Title:
Io Volcano Culann Patera
Explanation:
What causes the unusual colors surrounding Io's volcanoes? Io [ http://www.nineplan…], the innermost large moon [ http://www.jpl.nasa…] of Jupiter [ http://www.solarvie…], is known to be the most tumultuous body [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] in the Solar System [ http://www.nineplan…]. Approximately the size of Earth's Moon [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], Io undergoes nearly continuous volcanic eruptions [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] from an interior heated by gravitational tides [ http://burro.astr.c…] from Jupiter and Jupiter's other large moons. The robot spacecraft Galileo [ http://galileo.jpl.…] currently orbiting Jupiter has been monitoring the active volcano Culann Patera [ http://pirlwww.lpl.…] over the past few years. The above images [ http://photojournal…] indicate that the volcano [ http://volcano.und.…] has produced not only red and black colored lava flows [ http://volcanoes.us…], but yellow sulfur [ http://pearl1.lanl.…] patches from explosive plumes. Green colors may arise when these processes affect the same terrain. White patches may be caused, in part, by sulfur dioxide [ http://www.epa.gov/…] snow. As Galileo [ http://nssdc.gsfc.n…] has fulfilled its mission objectives [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…http://nssdc.gsfc.n…] and is running low on maneuvering fuel, NASA plans to crash [ http://astrobiology…] the spacecraft into Jupiter during 2003.
