Title:
A Close-Up of Aurora on Jupiter
Explanation:
Jupiter [ http://www.seds.org…] has aurorae [ http://www.geo.mtu.…]. Like Earth [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], the magnetic field [ http://liftoff.msfc…] of the gas giant funnels charged particles released from the Sun [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] onto the poles. As these particles strike the atmosphere, electrons [ http://www-spof.gsf…] are temporarily knocked away from existing gas molecules [ http://www.chemistr…]. Electric force [ http://www.colorado…] attracts these electrons back. As the electrons [ http://www.aip.org/…] recombine to remake neutral molecules, auroral light [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] is emitted. In the above recently released photograph [ http://oposite.stsc…] by the Hubble Space Telescope [ http://www.stsci.ed…] taken in ultraviolet light [ http://snoopy.gsfc.…], the aurorae [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] appear as annular sheets around the pole. Unlike Earth's aurorae [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], Jupiter's aurorae [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] include several bright streaks and dots [ http://oposite.stsc…]. These marks are caused by magnetic flux tubes connecting Jupiter [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] to its largest moons [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…]. Specifically, Io [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] caused the bright streak on the far left, Ganymede [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] caused the bright dot below center, and Europa [ http://www.seds.org…] caused the dot to its right.
