Our Milky Way Galaxy [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] is not alone. It is part of a gathering of about 25 galaxies known as the Local Group [ http://www.seds.org…]. Members include the Great Andromeda Galaxy [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] (M31), M32 [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], M33 [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], the Large Magellanic Cloud [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], the Small Magellanic Cloud [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], Dwingeloo 1 [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…], several small irregular galaxies [ http://www.seds.org…], and many dwarf elliptical [ http://nedwww.ipac.…] and dwarf spheroidal galaxies [ http://www.astro.uu…]. Pictured [ http://www.cfht.haw…] on the lower left is one of the many dwarf ellipticals [ http://www.astro.ps…]: NGC 205 [ http://www.seds.org…]. Like M32 [ http://www.seds.org…], NGC 205 [ http://nedwww.ipac.…] is a companion to the large M31, and can sometimes be seen to the south of M31 [ http://www.seds.org…]'s center in photographs. The above image [ http://www.cfht.haw…] shows NGC 205 to be unusual [ http://adsabs.harva…] for an elliptical galaxy [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] in that it contains at least two dust clouds [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] (at 1 and 4 o'clock - they are visible but hard to spot) and signs of recent star formation [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…]. This galaxy is sometimes known as M110, although it was actually not part of Messier [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…]'s original catalog [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…].
