NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day Collection
Title:
Aurora Persei
Explanation:
Last month, skywatchers were treated to an unexpected coincidence: bright aurorae [
http://www.ips.gov.
] occurred during [
http://antwrp.gsfc.
] the Perseid Meteor Shower [
http://antwrp.gsfc.
]. The above picture [
http://www.iconnect
] was taken August 12 and captures eerie looking aurorae and a faint Perseid meteor [
http://antwrp.gsfc.
] above Cross Lake [
http://www.lake-lin
] in Wisconsin [
http://www.state.wi
], USA. The near future holds promise for both more aurorae [
http://www.geo.mtu.
] and a better meteor [
http://www.seds.org
] shower. Aurorae [
http://antwrp.gsfc.
] are becoming increasingly common as their trigger -- our Sun [
http://www-spof.gsf
] -- nears its period of highest activity during its eleven-year magnetic cycle [
http://www.sunspotc
]. Coming up in mid-November is the quirky Leonids Meteor Shower [
http://comets.amsme
]. Although one of the better studied meteor showers [
http://www.amsmeteo
], the Leonids [
http://leonid.arc.n
] have surprised astronomers many times and so many an optimistic skywatcher promises to be outside this year hoping for a memorable show [
http://antwrp.gsfc.
].
