Title:
The Crab Nebula in Blue and White
Explanation:
The Crab Nebula is a complex shell of expanding gas. The Crab Nebula [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] formed from a star that was seen to explode in a supernova [ http://imagine.gsfc…] about 1000 years ago. This two color composite image [ http://www.noao.edu…] taken with the WIYN 3.5-meter telescope [ http://www.noao.edu…] shows in great detail filamentary structure of the glowing hydrogen [ http://pearl1.lanl.…] gas. Also known as M [ http://www.seds.org…]1, the center is home to a dense neutron star [ http://www.astro.um…], a star as massive as our Sun [ http://www.seds.org…] but only the size of a city [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…]. The neutron star [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] is a pulsar [ http://lheawww.gsfc…] that spins thirty times a second and spits out energy that powers the nebula. The nebula [ http://nineplanets.…] is named from its likeness to a crab [ http://www.clever.n…] in an early drawing. The Crab Nebula [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…] still presents mysteries [ http://adsabs.harva…] today as the total mass of the nebula and pulsar [ http://www.jb.man.a…] appears much less than the mass of the original pre-supernova star [ http://antwrp.gsfc.…]!
