ASTER's 15-meter (49-foot) resolution images provide detailed snapshots of urban areas for land-use, transportation, and environmental planning and monitoring. These images of Istanbul, Turkey, show a full 60 by 60 kilometer (37 x 37 mile) ASTER scene and a 21 by 24 kilometer (13 x 14 mile) sub-scene in the visible and infrared channels. Vegetation appears red; urban areas are blue-green. Two bridges spanning the Bosporus and ships in the busy channel can be seen in the enlargement. In the full-frame image, the water areas have been replaced with a thermal image: dark blue shows colder waters, light blue indicates warmer areas. The contrast makes visible the dark lines of boat wakes and cold water entering the Sea of Marmara from deeper waters of the Bosporus. ASTER acquired these images on April 7, 2000. # # # # #
